This Is A Republican Shutdown

I know I know. You're just being partisan with an article title like that. Stop the blame game, is something you may say and under any normal circumstance, you'd be right.

This isn't normal though.

In what feels like a lifetime ago, President Donald Trump met with Democratic leaders in the Oval Office and proclaimed to the cameras that he'd own the shutdown. It'd be his shutdown he said. Some time later before the old congress turned into the new current congress, bipartisan legislation to keep the government open was passed in the senate unanimously.

"I am proud to shut down the government for border security, Chuck. … I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down. I’m not going to blame you for it." – Donald Trump, December 11th, 2018

When it reached the republican controlled house however, well that's when Donald Trump heard from his TV friends. Thus, after hearing from conservative commentators he decided to withdraw support from a bipartisan bill to keep the government open and to allow discussion for a "wall" to continue on.

The government shut down and a new congress was sworn in. Democrats controlling the House and Republicans controlling the Senate. Democrats, in an effort to keep government open and make sure workers had paychecks passed the bill passed by the previous Senate, still controlled by the same Republican leadership.

At this point, you would have thought that congress would pass this and the President would veto and then Congress could override such a veto and move on with the People's business. That's not what happened though. The Republican led Senate leadership decided to abdicate their responsibility and won't vote for the measure they supported unanimously just a couple weeks prior.

So despite what you may hear, this isn't a Trump shutdown (Even though he said it would be his) nor is it a Democratic shutdown as Democrats are full on board with border security measures. The Republican Party is putting its politics before The People and for what? A "wall"? I think average folks can understand what the real problem here is.

This is a Republican Shutdown.
